ネジの形をした孤島「ネジが島」では頭にネジを挿したロボットのような生命体「ボキャボット」たちが面白い言葉を互いに言い合い勝敗を決める「ボキャバトル」が盛んに行われていた。 11歳の誕生日を迎えたネジが島の王子のネジル・ネジールは父のジル・ハナジール国王から王族の証「ネジ魂」を授けられるが、ネジ魂は遠く彼方へ飛んで行ってしまう。後を追ってみたらネジ穴のある卵を見つけ、ネジ魂を挿してみるとボキャボットのヘボットが生まれる。城に帰ってみたネジルは王国のしきたりとしてジルと初めてのボキャバトルに挑むが、完敗。ネジルは城から追い出され、ヘボットと共にネジ集めの旅に出るのだった。
