Un poveraccio possiede una foto che lo ritrae in una trincea sul fronte della Grande Guerra in compagnia di Benito Mussolini, che nel frattempo ha fatto carriera. L'uomo intende recarsi dal Duce con il documento per ottenere una promozione nel lavoro, ma quando finalmente riesce ad entrare nell'ufficio di Mussolini questi è affacciato al balcone per annunciare la seconda guerra mondiale. L'ex commilitone se ne va amareggiato.
