汉朝末年，奸臣当道，太师董卓专横残暴，独揽大权，久怀篡逆之心，其义子。吕布骁勇非常，使董卓如虎添翼，越发肆无忌惮。一日，董卓宴请百官，席间吕布赶来，出示了朝臣司宣张温致袁术的密信。董卓大怒，命令吕布当场处决了司宣张温，文武百官人人心惊胆战，敢怒而不敢言。司徒王允为人正直，忧国忧民，他回到府中闷闷不乐，有心要除去董卓，但又无计可施。心中烦闷之际，他深夜来到了后花园，听到园中有呜咽哭泣之声。王允闻声寻去，见是府中歌姬貂蝉。貂蝉年方十八，色艺双绝，能歌善舞。她深明大义，愿舍身救国。王允一见大喜，决定收认貂蝉为义女，并定下连环计，引诱董卓、吕布父子来上钩。王允赠吕布金冠一顶。吕布心中大喜，特意登门前来致谢。
