公元618年，在华夏历史上占有最重要的地位的唐帝国建立。帝国建立不久，唐高祖李渊的次子——秦王李世民发动玄武门之变，诛杀同胞兄弟，如愿坐上皇帝宝座。为了向父亲展现孝道，唐高宗在长安城东北方向主持修建大明宫，以作太上皇避暑的离宫。公元664年，雄壮巍峨的大明宫落成，它占地五千多亩，相当于五百个足球场大小。从唐太宗开始，这座帝国至高无上的权力中心，在222年的岁月里见证了唐王朝的起伏兴衰，贞观之治、开元盛世，是大唐最值得称道的荣耀顶点，而安史之乱、甘露之变、黄巢起义、宦官专权、藩镇割据则接二连三在帝国的肌体上留下永远无法愈合的血型伤疤。 战火和尘埃带走了幻灭盛景，而今的人们只能从半埋泥土中的断井残垣遥想纵隔千年的盛世繁华……
