1937年，日本帝国主义的铁蹄蹂躏中原，巍巍古都南京沦陷，数万军民被丧失人性的侵略者残忍杀害。尸横遍野，血流成河，当年繁华的南京城已经成为令人不忍卒睹的人间地狱。侵略者无视国际条约，对西方国家划定的安全区也垂涎三尺。在市中央，置身于炮火硝烟之中的圣马德伦教堂巍峨耸立，竭尽全力庇护来此避难的人们。神父不愿离去，法比（张嘉译 饰）硬撑着留下来陪伴。生活在最底层的玉墨（宋佳 饰）、春池（高叶 饰）、豆蔻（张可佳 饰）等人辗转来到教堂，可即便落难如斯仍不免遭受其他同胞的蔑视和嘲讽。 命运的考验越来越残酷，为了保卫至高无上的生命，法比、戴涛（胡歌 饰）等人共同经历了人生最彻头彻骨的洗礼……
