The game broke the record in Japan for the best-selling debut of a Nintendo DS game. The game sold over 30 million copies worldwide, and is the best-selling game for the DS, and one of the best-selling video games of all time. It was followed up by New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and later New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS, and New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U.
