Venedig ist die Stadt der Gondeln, Br ücken und Kanäle und gilt auf der ganzen Welt als Sinnbild italienischer Romantik. Doch das Mekka der Träumer und Künstler ist bedroht: Denn allmählich versinkt die Stadt im Meer. Die zahllosen Pfähle, auf denen Venedig errichtet wurde, bohren sich unaufhaltsam in den weichen Grund der Lagune und ziehen Gebäude, Gassen und Cafés Zentimeter um Zentimeter mit in die Tiefe. Doch damit nicht genug: Der allmähliche Meeresspiegelanstieg und immer stärker werdende Sturmfluten verschlimmern die Situation zusätzlich. Mit einer innovativen Hochwasser-Barriere soll Venedig sprichwörtlich vor dem Untergang bewahrt werden.
It's the ultimate engineering challenge: rescue the magnificent city of Venice, Italy, before it is drowned by the Adriatic Sea. A fantastic 5.5 billion dollar plan is taking shape. It's called the "Mose project", after the biblical saviour Moses. They're constructing 78 massive floodgates, up to 29 metres tall, that will lie on the seabed. Whenever a dangerous high tide threatens the city the gates are supposed to rise from water and hold back the sea. The dynamic woman at the helm; Chief Engineer, Dr. Maria Theresa Brotto, declares, "Without the Mose, we will lose Venice." But no one can predict when a colossal high tide will swamp the city and it's a race against time for the workers of the Mose project.
Depuis sa fondation au VIème siècle, Venise a subi une montée des eaux de la mer Adriatique de près de 2 mètres. Régulièrement, la ville est innondée, et chaque année les eaux rongent un peu plus les fondations, les murs et les fresques, et empêchent les gondoles de passer sous les ponts. Pour sauver Venise, un ouvrage dantesque est en cours de réalisation, la construction de 78 digues géantes et mobiles aux 3 entrées de la Lagune qui doivent protéger la ville des inondations et des grandes marées pendant plus d´un siècle.
