  • S01E05 2019-07-09 Mohegan Sun

    • April 21, 2020

Tonight (April 21st), Phish will webcast their July 9th, 2019 performance at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena as the fifth episode of their ongoing archival webcast/cooking series, Dinner and a Movie. The band has been on a hot streak for much of this summer and these two indoor, midweek casino shows have been circled on many fans’ calendars since the tour was announced back in January. Indoor Phish during summer tour always feels like it has added potential for greatness, and the shows at the home of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun—which boasts the smallest capacity of any venue on the summer schedule—quickly sold out months in advance. With so much momentum behind the band this deep into the summer and so much hype placed on this Mohegan run, the sky was the limit at Tuesday’s performance.

  • S01E06 2016-10-28 Las Vegas

    • April 28, 2020

Phish has announced the details for the sixth edition of the band’s weekly Dinner and a Movie webcast/cooking series. This week’s show will highlight the band’s performance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV on 10/28/2016. This evening’s ‘Dinner and a Movie’ selection takes us back to the first night of Phish’s 2016 Halloween run in Vegas, which came at the end of a brief Fall Tour featuring stops in North Charleston, SC; Jacksonville, FL; Nashville, TN; Alpharetta, GA; and Grand Prairie, TX. Of note, you may notice a different lighting rig than you’re used to behind the band. If you recall, Chris Kuroda employed a system of mechanically-operated LED screens in 2016 that would expand and contract as the show went on. That rig was abandoned for a more traditional setup in 2017.

  • S01E08 2018-08-03 Alpharetta

    • May 12, 2020

The August 3rd, 2018 performance kicked off a three-night run at the Georgia amphitheater. Coming in the middle of Phish’s first full summer tour since 2016 (summer 2017 was mostly spent at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the Baker’s Dozen), this whole run showcased some of the best live Phish of the year. Bassist Mike Gordon was just as enamored as the fans with the band’s playing in Alpharetta in August 2018. When he released a playlist of his favorite jams of the 2018 summer tour on LivePhish later that year, four of his six picks came from that sweltering weekend in Georgia and two of them were plucked from this very show—the behemoth first-set “Ghost” and relatively short but undoubtedly sweet “Blaze On” from set two. As Mike noted in a tweet about the list, he had picked those jams because they evoked “a feeling of effortless musical adventuring.” This show was so packed with top-notch jams, in fact, that even Mike’s picks were met with disagreement from many fans (i.e. “How do you pick ‘Blaze On’ when that same set also included 17 minutes worth of ‘Tweezer’ and a 20-minute ‘Carini’ jam?”). 8/3/18 is a monster from start to finish, and we can’t wait to relive the adventure tonight.

Trey also on percussion. [2] LeRoi Moore on saxophone. The jam during Bathtub Gin featured Trey jumping up and down in time with a syncopated jam, as well as strong Drowned teases. Near the end of the jam, Trey mentioned how good it was to be back home and named the four newer songs that were played. The beginning of Bowie included Radar Love teases from Mike and a Birdland jam and Wolfman’s included a Bathtub Gin tease. The jam out of Theme, as well as Funky Bitch, featured LeRoi Moore on saxophone. The jam with LeRoi included a segment where he played two saxes, Trey played three guitars, Mike played two basses and the Cracklin’ Rosie cymbals, Fish had four drumsticks and Page was lying across his keyboards playing as many as possible. At one point, Trey grabbed two drumsticks and played them on Fish's cymbals and his guitar before tossing them into the crowd. LeRoi also teased the Woody Woodpecker theme during the jam.

  • S01E10 2018-12-29 MSG

    • May 26, 2020

Tonight’s Dinner and a Movie takes us back to the four-night 2018 Phish New Year’s Run at Madison Square Garden. Of particular note, this marked the first run of Phish shows after the band tricked audiences on Halloween in Las Vegas by devising a made-up Scandinavian band, Kasvot Växt, and “covering” their obscure album, i rokk, from 1981. Of course, we now know that “Kasvot Växt” was an elaborate prank and that the songs on the “covered album” were actually written “in character” by Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Jon Fishman, and Mike Gordon following the cancellation of Curveball earlier that summer. You can read Trey’s remarks about how the Curveball cancellation directly inspired Kasvot Växt here. So, why all the talk about Kasvot Växt? Well, with this new crop of songs now on the table, this run saw the band begin to insert the new material into their regular setlists. Of the ten new songs debuted on Halloween, nine of them (all but “Everything Is Hollow”) would go on to show up during the 2018 MSG run. Many of them were featured in key slots in the four 2018 YEMSG setlists, from the “We Are Come To Outlive Our Brains” that opened night one on 12/28 to the “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” that lifted Trey and Mike to the rafters as part of the outer space-centric gag on 12/31. Kasvot Växt material figured prominently into the 12/29 performance, as well. The first-set “Turtle In The Clouds” confirmed to fans that the associated Trey/Mike choreography was a permanent fixture of the song and not just a Halloween one-off, while the “Death Don’t Hurt Very Long” sandwiched between two slices of “Tweezer” jam during set two showed these songs’ potential for improvisational antics.

  • S01E11 2013-07-26 The Gorge

    • June 9, 2020

Thankfully, Phish showed up at the Gorge on July 26th to sunny weather and wasted no time diving into what would wind up being one of the tour’s strongest gigs. The band got the show on the road with an “AC/DC Bag” that stuck an eventual landing into “Timber (Jerry The Mule)”. The show’s first true highlight followed in the form of a potent “Wolfman’s Brother” featuring strong funk grooves from all four players which built to a searing peak.

Phish celebrated the New Year with a livestreamed concert from “The Ninth Cube,” which took place at the Rock Lititz Studio in Lititz, Pa. The performance served as part of Phish’s Dinner And A Movie series and was presented by SiriusXM and Phish Radio. The sets took place without an audience and subbed in for Phish’s usual Madison Square Garden Run, which was rescheduled to April due to the surge of COVID-19 cases propelled by the highly contagious omicron variant.
