這是一部講述大唐開國史的連續劇，開頭以甚少的鏡頭交代了楊廣助隋文帝滅陳，李淵與高潁殺了楊廣心儀的女人、陳叔寶的愛妃張麗華，從而與楊廣結下仇怨。 由於李淵與楊廣是表親，所以非但沒遭殺戮反而連連升官、手握重兵。但楊廣殺其之心卻無時不有。鏡頭一下轉到狩獵場，出現的是五十開外的李淵，正主持一場狩獵大賽，參賽者正是他的兒子：李建成、李世民、李元吉，楊廣找藉口讓李淵入朝，想羅織些罪名將他處斬，被李世民所懷疑，於是夜探皇宮，不小心露出行蹤，被楊吉兒所救，二人感情得以發展。自此兩人便開始多年的聚聚散散的生涯。
