Sam had been freed from Hell without his soul. Though it was ultimately restored – at great cost – they were unable to erase the horrifying and dangerous memories of Sam's time in the pit, memories that threatened to destroy him from within, even as civil war raged in Heaven above them and monsters gathered to ravage the Earth.
