Die erste Folge des Sechsteilers spielt im frühen Eozän 16 Millionen Jahre nach dem Aussterben der Dinosaurier. Schauplatz der Handlung ist das heutige Mitteleuropa, namentlich das Messelgebiet in Deutschland.
15 million years after the end of the Age of Dinosaurs, Earth has recovered from the massive meteor impact. Rainforests dominated the early Eocene, and the planet has a warm, tropical climate. It is this age that the mammals begin to thrive and spread, taking over niches left vacant by the death of the dinosaurs. But it is the birds that dominate this period in Earth's history, and they are almost all killers. But in the water, the first evidence of the mammal's destiny has appeared!
Il y a 49 millions d'années, soit 20 millions d'années après l'extinction des dinosaures, d'étranges créatures firent leur apparition sur terre. Le climat tropical favorisa ainsi l'éclosion d'animaux comme l'Ambulocetus, un animal amphibien terrifiant ou le Gastronis, un oiseau carnivore d'une demi-tonne. "A l'aube des temps nouveaux" retrace quelques heures de la vie d'une femelle Lepticidium, un petit insectivore et sa lutte permanente pour survivre !
Hace 49 millones de años, Eoceno inferior, Alemania. El mundo se ha vuelto más cálido y húmedo que en épocas anteriores, donde los bosques tropicales llegan a alcanzar los límites de los círculos polares. Florecen diversas formas de vida, aunque la mayoría de los animales son de pequeño tamaño, descendientes de los que sobrevivieron a la extinción masiva del K/T. En la zona de Messel, Alemania, está a punto de ocurrir una catástrofe volcánica que amenaza a toda la fauna local. Se recrean los siguientes animales:
Leptictidium (un pequeño mamífero, lejanamente emparentado con los modernos insectívoros)
Gastornis (ave no voladora)
Godinotia (primate primitivo)
Propalaeotherium (perisodáctilo primitivo)
Ambulocetus (ballena primitiva)
Eurotamandua (oso hormiguero)
Formicium giganteum (hormiga gigante)
Carnívoro primitivo (miácido) sin identificar
Otros insectos, ranas, cocodrilos.
En la introducción aparecen un Tyrannosaurus y un Ankylosaurus, dinosaurios ya vistos en la serie anterior. Los protagonistas son una familia de Leptictidium compuesta por una madre y sus cuatro crías.

Пока самка лептиктидия с детёнышем питается, самка гасторниса охраняет гнездо, в котором впоследствии должен вылупиться её птенец, успешно охотится за пропалеотерием и защищает свою территорию от другого гасторниса. Однако, пока самка гасторниса отсутствовала, гигантские муравьи напали на гнездо и съели птенца, когда тот только начал выбираться из яйца. Когда наступает ночь, мы можем наблюдать за жизнью ночных приматов годиноций.
