Sally gesteht Don, dass sie sich außer Stande sieht, länger mit Dick und Harry unter einem Dach zu leben. Don sieht in Sallys Beichte jedoch eine indirekte Aufforderung, sich ihr gegenüber zu erklären. Er fackelt nicht lange, macht Sally den vermeintlich gewünschten Heiratsantrag und stürzt seine 'Zukünftige' damit in arge Bedrängnis, denn Sally will eigentlich ein Leben als unabhängige und ungebundene Frau genießen. Dick hat momentan andere Sorgen: Ein defektes Badezimmer sorgt für eine handfeste Auseinandersetzung mit der Vermieterin, Mrs. Dubcek. Harry ist ihm in dieser Situation allerdings keine Hilfe - im Gegenteil: Auf Grund seiner Liaison mit Mrs. Dubceks Tochter Vicki, schlägt er sich auf die Seite des 'Feindes'. Ohne Strom und Licht, einsam und verlassen will Dick die Schlacht 'ausbibbern'. Vicki gelingt es endlich, die verfeindeten Parteien zu versöhnen. Harry kehrt in seine Familie zurück, und alles endet friedlich im wieder reparierten und warmen Badezimmer.
When Sally tells Officer Don she can't take living with Dick, Harry, and Tommy anymore, he assumes that she wants him to propose. Sally realizes, however, that what she really wants is to start living as an independent woman, and they tearfully break off their engagement. When Dick has a tenant-landlord dispute with the Dubceks, he casts Harry out of the family for consorting with the enemy. The situation escalates to the point where Dick, frozen and filthy, is reduced to squatting in his apartment without benefit of heat or lights. The feud ends when Dick realizes he was so preoccupied that he didn't pay attention to an important milestone in Sally's life -- her all-too-brief engagement. When Alissa, the girl of his dreams, gets detention, Tommy works hard to get punished as well, in the hopes that it will provide him with the perfect opportunity to ask her out.
Itsenäistä elämää kaipaava Sally ei enää halua asua perheensä parissa. Dick joutuu sovittamattomaan ristiriitaan vuokranantajansa kanssa.
