Season 1

SNL began as a replacement for weekend reruns of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Producer Lorne Michaels envisioned a 90-minute comedy/variety show that leaned into the traditions of live television, while delivering a satiric edge that was then uncommon in TV comedy. When it debuted on October 11, 1975, the show's Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time Players were all but unknown. By the season finale in July 1976, they were stars in their own right, and the rest is history.
