徐家是浙江海宁的生意望族，独子徐志摩（黄磊 饰）自幼爱读书，一心求学的他为了换取读书的权利而答应了家里安排的婚事，与当地千金张幼仪（刘若英 饰）结为夫妻。一年后诞下麟儿，志摩便远赴英伦。在英国，他偶遇林家千金、十六岁的才女林徽因 （周迅 饰），并一见倾心，度过了一段纯美的岁月，直到张幼仪突然抵英，林徽因才知道志摩已是有妇之夫，顿时默然。由于自己母亲饱受一夫多妻之苦，林徽因决不让自己也成为破坏别人婚姻的借口，她毅然决然地跟志摩提出了分手，并即时回国，断绝想念。 但志摩与幼仪的离婚已经不可挽回，坚强的张幼仪给他所要的自由，自己一个人开始努力地生活。回国后的徐志摩发现林徽因正与梁思成交往，且两家大人有意撮合，志摩百般表明心迹仍不能得到佳人同意，林徽因最终嫁与梁思成。 徐志摩一天天慢慢练习，练习习惯没有林徽因的日子，而这天他遇见了陆小曼（伊能静 饰），又一段惊世之恋开始了。
