Am Fuße des Matterhorns schlängelt sich der Glacier Express vom idyllischen Bergdorf Zermatt bis ins mondäne St. Moritz auf einer bis zu 2.000 Meter hohen Bergstrecke durch die Alpen. Wo Automobile selbst mit Schneeketten an ihre Grenzen geraten würden, gewährleistet diese Bahn den reibungslosen Touristenverkehr in den beliebtesten Ski- und Erholungsgebieten der Schweiz und sorgt so ganz nebenbei dafür, dass das ländliche Kleinod auch weiterhin auto- und feinstaubfrei bleibt.
The Glacier Express climbs almost 5 kilometers during its daily eight hour journey on a route that challenges locomotives to their max, and yet is so beautifully engineered the railway has been declared an UNESCO Heritage Site – one of only three railroads in the world with that honour.
Running between Zermatt, at the foot of the famous Matterhorn, and the ski town of St Moritz, the Glacier Express travels across the mighty Swiss Alps as it runs from one side of the country to the other. 250,000 people a year take this train, which has been running this route since 1930, yet parts of the rail line have been in operation for more than 125 years
Depuis 1930, le parcours du Glacier Express est l'un des plus spectaculaires au monde. Ce train qui traverse trois cantons suisses en huit heures offre un panorama unique sur les Alpes. De Saint-Moritz à Zermatt, la voie ferrée enjambe 291 ponts et traverse 91 tunnels. Le point culminant du parcours se situe à plus de 2000 mètres d'altitude. Plus de mille passagers empruntent quotidiennement ce train panoramique, qui ne dépasse jamais les 50 kilomètres par heure.
