ミツバチの子どもマーヤは、好奇心旺盛でおしゃまな女の子。マーヤは教育係のカッサンドラ先生から飛び方や蜜の集め方を学んでいたが、ある日まだ出会ったことのない驚きや感動を求めてミツバチの国を飛び出してしまう。追いかけてきた友達のウイリーと一緒に、マーヤにはバッタのフィリップやカブトムシなど新しい友だちもたくさんでき、ゆかいな旅が始まっていく。やがて旅を続けるうちに、ミツバチと対立しているスズメバチの軍隊がミツバチの国を襲おうとしている事を、故郷に知らせに帰るマーヤ。みんなで力を合わせてスズメバチを倒し、マーヤも大活躍する。そして旅の間に成長していたマーヤは、カッサンドラ先生の勧めでとうとう今度は自分が大切な教育係の仕事に任命されるのだった。
Im Bienenstock auf der Klatschmohnwiese wird eine Biene geboren, die gleich nachdem sie aus ihrer Zelle geschlüpft ist, besonders auffällt: die Biene Maja. Sie lacht, tanzt sofort aus der Reihe und bringt die Königin mit ihren Fragen durcheinander. Frau Kassandra, ihre Lehrerin, wundert sich sehr über diese kleine, freche, neugierige Biene. Für sie ist es wichtig, dass alle Bienen in der Gemeinschaft ihre Arbeit leisten. Arbeit allerdings ist auch nicht die Sache einer anderen Biene mit dem Namen Willi. Beim ersten Flugunterricht freunden sich Maja und Willi an. Als Maja das erste Mal über die Klatschmohnwiese fliegt könnte sie vor lauter Freude überschäumen. Die vielen bunten Blumen, die glitzernden Tautropfen, der blaue Himmel und ein großer Regenbogen lassen Majas Herz höher schlagen. Sie trifft lustige Insekten wie den kleinen Mistkäfer Ben, die griesgrämige Schnecke Rufus und Flip, den Grashüpfer …
Freshly hatched bee Maya is a little whirlwind and won't follow the rules of the hive. One of these rules is not to trust the hornets that live beyond the meadow. When the Royal Jelly is stolen, the hornets are suspected and Maya is thought to be their accomplice. No one believes that she is the innocent victim and no one will stand by her except for her good-natured and best friend Willy. After a long and eventful journey to the hornets hive Maya and Willy soon discover the true culprit and the two friends finally bond with the other residents of the opulent meadow.
When an overenthusiastic Maya accidentally embarrasses the Empress of Buzztropolis, she is forced to unite with a team of misfit bugs and compete in the Honey Games for a chance to save her hive.
When Maya, a headstrong little bee, and her best friend Willi, rescue an ant princess they find themselves in the middle of an epic bug battle that will take them to strange new worlds and test their friendship to its limits.
