4、5日前に生まれたアヒルの4羽の子どもが、もう元気よく池を泳いでいる。アヒルの母さんは最後の一番大きな卵を温めている。おしゃべりのおばあさんアヒルは、七面鳥の卵ではないかと心配する。それから3日たってやっとかえったヒナは、首が長く変な声で鳴く。末っ子のアヒルは泳ぎの訓練では元気なところを見せ、母親は安心する。しかし、ほかの子と姿が違っているため、末っ子のアヒルは、イヌからも馬鹿にされ、カエルからもいたずらをされる。仲間のアヒルからも嫌われ、4人の兄からものけ者にされる。末っ子のアヒルは、ある夜、母と兄のもとを去る。秋になり、ひとり旅を続けるアヒルの子は、雁の仲間に入れてくれるように頼むが、猟師の発砲に合い、かろうじて猟犬から逃れることができる。冬になり、雪の降る中、湖畔の別荘近くの小屋に、アヒルの子が寝ている。かたわらには、黒猫と牝鶏が心配そうに見守っている。気が付いたアヒルの子は、黒猫のおじさんから、イタチに襲われているところを助けられたことを聞く。牝鶏はアヒルの子の姿がアヒルに見えないと言うが、黒猫はいつまでもここで暮らしていいと言う。また春が来て夏になる。別荘の子どもたちがきれいな白鳥を見つける。黒猫が雌鶏に、アヒルの子が白鳥になって、育てた甲斐があると言う。若い白鳥は楽しい安らかな日を過ごしているが、夕暮れが近づく頃、やさしいアヒルの母さんのことを思い出すのだった。
