Edwin and his friend, Roddy, who goes by "Flake", are constantly being bullied in school and misunderstood at home. While going through Flake's dad's gun collection, they both get the idea to shoot up their school and get revenge on the people who attack them. Later, they meet an acquaintance at the gas station, Hermie. He tells them he's getting beat up by a kid by the name of Blatzenstein, and when asking the kid to stop doesn't help, Hermie hesitantly goes with their plan, but doesn't get himself involved. The day the shooting takes place, Edwin is terrified, but Flake calls him a wuss if he backs out. When the two enter the gym, Edwin doesn't shoot and Flake is killed by the police.
