王兵以短小篇幅观察了一个小人物点“煤”成金的狡黠机灵与求存一直。在连接山西煤矿和天津港口的运煤通道上，开大货车的四季，载满车斗的每块，日以继夜穿梭往来。买煤的人和卖煤的人，都在盘算如何从中图利，人与人的关系全靠金钱来定义。既肮脏又乌亮的煤，反照近日所有人向钱看的面貌。
