Autobiographische Aufzeichnungen und Gedichte in Verbindung mit Archivmaterial, Dokumenten und Interviews zeigen Leben Haltung und Werk des Dichters und kommunistischen Aktivisten. Interviews mit Weinert und anderen Zeitgenossen sowie Interpretationen Weinertscher Gedichte durch Ernst Busch und Weinerts autobiografische Bekenntnisse sind enthalten. Der Film berichtet über Weinerts Schaffen in der Weimarer Republik, unter dem NS-Regime, in Emigration und Krieg.
