L’histoire prend place à une époque contemporaine à sa réalisation – début des années 1940 – et on y suit Roland Samblanca, qui, de passage dans la Cité de Carcassonne avec sa femme Marie-Claude et sa sœur Dominique, va rencontrer aux détours d’une promenade solitaire dans la citadelle, une mystérieuse et envoûtante jeune femme tout de noir vêtue : Sylvie. Cette dernière vit chez son père adoptif, un bien étrange monsieur qui se prétend être le dernier évêque albigeois.
