Le 11 juin 1955, deux heures après le début des 24h du Mans, une voiture percute une foule de spectateurs. Malgré les 82 morts et les plus de 120 blessés, les organisateurs décident de ne pas interrompre la course. L'enquête qui a suivi l'accident n'a pas permis de répondre à toutes les questions et ses résultats sont toujours classifiés alors qu'ils auraient dû être rendus publics depuis longtemps.
