Eine literarische Jugendflause des Gymnasialdirektors Gollwitz verfolgt ihn unerwartet bis in die Gegenwart. Nach unablässigem Drängen seines Hausmädchens willigt er schließlich ein, dass der umtriebige Theaterdirektor Emanuel Striese Gollwitzs Interpretation des "Raub der Sabinerinnen" auf die Bühne bringt. Die Inszenierung des klassischen Dramas wird zu einem totalen Flop und Striese muss plötzlich um das Überleben seines Theaters und die Rettung seiner Ehre kämpfen.
