Jérémie Pastor revient à Saint-Martial pour l’enterrement de son ancien patron boulanger. Il passe quelques jours chez Martine, sa veuve, qui n’a pas envie de le voir repartir. Vincent, le fils de Martine, voit ça d’un mauvais œil, et les deux hommes en viennent a` se battre. Jérémie tue Vincent. Il arrive a` cacher qu’il est le meurtrier, avec la complicité inattendue de l’abbe´´ Grisolles, le cure´ du village, qui lui fournit un alibi en échange de son amour.
