裏稼業で闇の仕掛人を営むはり医者の梅安は、元締めである音羽屋の依頼で、ろうそく問屋・辻屋の後妻、お照を暗殺する。お照は実は盗っ人で、悪辣な孫八と手を組み、辻屋の後添いの座にまんまと納まると、その身代を乗っ取ろうとひそかにたくらんでいた。一方、梅安と同じ仕掛人である左内は、剣の腕前を買われ、八丁堀の同心・峯山又十郎から手を組まないかと勧められていた。
