Der elfjährige Wesley Parker ist zuckerkrank und auf tägliche Insulinspritzen angewiesen. Seine strenggläubigen Eltern sind jedoch überzeugt, daß allein der Glaube hilft. In ihrem religiösen Wahn stellen sie die Insulinbehandlung ein und warten auf ein Wunder. Wesley stirbt. 1970 mußten sich die verblendeten Eltern vor Gericht verantworten. 1980 veröffentlichte der reuige Vater Larry Parker seinen leidvollen Erfahrungsbericht, auf dem dieser kritische Film basiert. Dem gelingt es, nie in allzu große Rührseligkeit abzugleiten.
