The film is inspired by the real-life case of the murder of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan du Plantier and imagines a trial that never took place against the alleged culprit, Eion Bailey. At the heart of the story is Juror No. 8 (Vicky Krieps), the only one who refuses to immediately agree to a guilty verdict, opposed by Juror No. 3 (John Connors), who is more impulsive and tormented.
Dans un procès fictif, douze membres d'un jury doivent décider si le journaliste Ian Bailey est coupable du meurtre en 1996 de la cinéaste française Sophie Toscan Du Plantier. À partir d'événements réels, le film reconstitue, à travers les discussions entre ces douze personnes, une affaire qui invite finalement le spectateur à tirer ses propres conclusions.
