In the 1970s, a young indigenous household worker Cleodegaria "Cleo" Gutiérrez works for an affluent family living in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City. As domestic strife and the constraints of social hierarchy unfold amidst a backdrop of powerful earthquakes, student revolts, and political unrest, the family struggles to stay together as forces threaten to pull them apart.

Messico, 1970. Roma è un quartiere medioborghese di Mexico City che affronta una stagione di grande instabilità economico-politica. Die junge Cleo arbeitet in den 1970er Jahren als Hausmädchen für eine mexikanische Mittelstandsfamilie im Stadtteil Roma in Mexiko Stadt. Zusammen mit ihrer Kollegin und Freundin Adela kümmert sie sich nicht nur ums Kochen und Putzen, sondern auch aufopferungsvoll um die drei Kinder des Haushalts. Als sich ihre Arbeitgeber Sofia und Antonio trennen und letzterer zuhause auszieht, hilft sie Sofia, diesen Umstand vor den Kindern geheimzuhalten. Als sie selbst von ihrem Freund Fermín schwanger wird, weist der die Verantwortung von sich und ergreift feige die Flucht. Für Sofia und Cleo keine einfache Situation. Dann kommt es in der Stadt nach politischen Studentenunruhen plötzlich zu einer heftigen Eskalation der Gewalt. Ein Demonstrant wird von Paramilitärs erschossen...
