Andrew Wyke, a híres krimiíró egy este meghívja elhagyatott helyen álló házába Milo Tindle-t, a divatos fodrászt. A helyzet pikantériáját az adja, hogy az idősödő Andrew felesége a jóval ifjabb Milo szeretője, a bonyodalom pedig ott kezdődik, hogy Andrew szívesen elválna a feleségétől, de nem akar tartásdíjat fizetni, Milo viszont nem elég gazdag ahhoz, hogy megfelelő körülményeket biztosítson a luxushoz szokott asszony számára. Andrew rafinált tervvel áll elő: Milo törjön be a házába és rabolja el a gyémántokat, amit aztán eladhat, Andrew pedig felmarkolja a kártérítést a biztosítótól. A látszólagos megegyezés hátterében azonban mindkét férfi veszélyes játszmába próbálja bevonni a másikat, amely mindkettejük számára halálos következményekkel járhat.

En échange de son consentement au divorce, Wyke propose à ce rival plus jeune de monter une arnaque à l'assurance, en feignant le vol de bijoux de grande valeur dans sa demeure, pour que Tindle dispose de fonds suffisants pour faire face aux besoins dispendieux de sa future épouse. A peine surpris, Tindle se laisse convaincre par ce drôle de marché.

Andrew Wyke, a successful writer of crime fiction, who lives in a large country manor house filled with elaborate games and automata, invites his wife's lover Milo Tindle, a hairdresser of Italian heritage, to his home to discuss the situation. Andrew explains that he has tired of his wife and wants Milo to take her off his hands. In order to provide Milo with enough money to take care of her, Andrew suggests that Milo steal some jewellery from the house, with Andrew recouping his losses through an insurance claim. Milo agrees and allows Andrew to lead him through an elaborate charade to fake the robbery. At the conclusion, Andrew pulls a pistol and reveals that the entire plot was meant to frame Milo as a robber, giving Andrew an excuse for shooting him. Andrew then appears to execute Milo by shooting him in the head.
