一男二女的三角戀愛是電影常見的題材，但總能觸動人心，這是因為人類往往不能完全替自己的感情作主。《月夜琴挑》描述年青有為的小提琴家（張揚）被夜總會紅歌星（張慧嫻）深深吸引，趁著妻子（陳青）外遊，迅即與她墮入愛河。原本以為是只是一次逢場作戲，但是時限已過，卻始終無法自拔……導演易文曾以撰寫言情小說和情書結集知名，故電影作品大部分都是愛情文藝片，甚至往往帶有或濃或淡的自傳色彩。本片即為一例，較諸之前的《情深似海》、《教我如何不想她》不遑多讓。著名音樂家姚敏撰寫的四首插曲悅耳動聽，保持著「電懋」／「國泰」都會文藝片的一貫高水準。
