This documentary film follows a freight train, starting from its origin in the Kansas City freight yard. We see how cars from different trains are separated, sent over the 'hump', then reassembled into new trains, including our fast freight number 40, which is scheduled to travel from Kansas City to Chicago. After the locomotive and caboose are connected, we see the train slowly wind its way out of the yard, then pick up speed in open country. The conductor, in the caboose a mile away from the locomotive, is in radio contact with the engineer and lets him know when the end of the train passes the end of a curve, trestle, or bridge, so the train can pick up speed again. We also see the freight train stop at a siding, to let a passenger train go by.
