Marianne von Soden zweifelt bereits an ihrer Ehe, obwohl diese gerade erst geschlossen ist. Nur ihretwegen hat ihr zukünftiger Mann Fritz seine ehemalige Geliebte verlassen, aber wird er vielleicht eines Tages mit ihr selbst genauso verfahren? Als sie Zeugin wird, wie Fritz die Nachricht vom Selbstmordversuch seiner Ex-Geliebten mit ein paar Geldscheinen und einem Lachen quittiert, ist Marianne erschüttert. Nach einem heftigen Streit über sein herzloses Gebaren verlässt sie ihn. Marianne will sich scheiden lassen.
