Kay Russell

Kay Russell (1952–2024) was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist best known as one half of the 1980s pop duo Fassbender-Russell. Alongside her musical partner Susan Fassbender, she co-wrote the 1981 synth-pop hit "Twilight Café", which reached number 21 on the UK Singles Chart and led to two appearances on Top of the Pops. By this point, ownership of the single had passed from Criminal to CBS Records. In March 1981, Fassbender appeared on German television programme, Disco. Two other singles followed soon after, namely “Stay" and "Merry-Go-Round". "Stay", the second single, was promoted by an appearance on Cheggers Plays Pop, a children's programme. Both tracks were collaborations between Fassbender and Russell. In January 1982, Fassbender and Russell appeared on another British TV show, Multi-Coloured Swap Shop, to promote “Merry-Go-Round". In her later years, Russell returned to music through a collaboration with Ewan McKenzie. They released two albums, Pandora's Box and Media Hack (2024), under the name The McKenzie FIX. Following her death on 29 September 2024 at age 72, a tribute album titled Walking In Space was released in September 2025 by Platform Records. The album features solo tracks and previously unreleased material, celebrating her legacy as a songwriter.
