Según datos aportados por los paleontólogos , el gamo y el muflón desaparecieron del continente europeo con la última glaciación. El muflón halló refugio en la isla de Córcega, el gamo en Asia menor. Fueron las condiciones climáticas los enemigos de ambas especies.
