1868 bricht der junge Ozeanograph Pierre Arronax zu einer gefährlichen Forschungsreise auf: An Bord der amerikanischen Fregatte „Abraham Lincoln“ will er die rätselhaften Angriffe auf mehrere Schiffe aufklären.
