Matt and Davin have very different ideas as to what makes a good pickup. For this episode, Matt chose a 1979 Dodge Lil' Red Express - big Mopar V-8, extreme styling and very limited production. Davin, on the other hand, went with a 1933 Ford Pickup. Boasting the iconic Flathead V-8, this vehicle was born out of necessity and eventually evolved into Ford's incredibly popular F-Series pickups.
In the latest episode of Generation Gap, Matt and Davin look at two vehicles that can go the distance – a 1952 Willys M38 Jeep and a 1976 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. The M38 gets points for proudly serving in the Korean War as well as the Michigan National Guard, while the civilian FJ has recently gained superstar status in the classic car marketplace.
Today on “Generation Gap,” the guys bring a pair of cars that fall firmly in the “cult classics” category. Davin’s choice, a 1967 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Convertible, has been called “unsafe at any speed.” The Corvair boasts a 2.7L, 2,683cc flat-6 engine behind the rear wheels. Matt’s pick, a 1986 Pontiac Fiero SE, has been known to catch fire at the most inopportune times. The Pontiac has the mid-engine 2.4L “Iron Duke” inline four.
Today on “Generation Gap,” we’re visiting the Lingenfelter Collection. Known for Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, Ken Lingenfelter was kind enough to let us experience some of his personal cars. Being able to check a few cars off our bucket list, we decided to compare GTOs. Davin has picked the aggressive muscle of a 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge, equipped with a 366 HP 400 V-8 High Output engine with Ram Air III. Matt picked a bit of a cheater 2006 Pontiac Custom GTO. The modern GTO is straight from GM Performance with a Twin Turbo LS2 with 750 HP.
In the latest episode of Generation Gap, the guys return to the Lingenfelter Collection to pit Shelby against Shelby. Davin's selection, a 1967 Shelby GT500, features the pure power of the custom-built Shelby 355-hp 428 "Police Interceptor" V-8, while Matt's 2010 Shelby GT500 Patriot Edition's expertly tuned supercharged V-8 squeezes an astonishing 540 hp out of its 330 cubic inches. The guys tackle this question: Do specs alone make a car?
In this episode of Generation Gap the guys compare Firebirds: old vs. new. Davin brought a classic 1968 Pontiac Firebird equipped with a 350-CID V-8 boasting 320 hp. Matt, on the other hand, had a bit of a trick up his sleeve bringing a 2010 Lingenfelter Performance Engineering Trans Am Chevrolet Camaro modified to the nines to look and perform like a modern Firebird. Its 455 CID and 655 hp are some impressive numbers, but how will it be on the road?
In the latest episode of Generation Gap, Matt and Davin have brought the muscle. Matt’s pick, a 1987 Buick GNX, is arguably one of the best muscle cars to come out of the 1980s, with a McLaren Performance-tuned turbo-charged V-6 putting 245 hp and 360 ft.-lb. of torque to the ground. Davin thought he could slip one by with this unassuming 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle. The secret is that it’s a rare COPO with the 427-cid engine with 425 hp and 460 ft.-lb. of torque. This Chevelle looks like grandma’s car, but goes like a Yenko.
In the latest episode of Generation Gap, the guys explore the “pickups” of the collector car world. But these “pickups” are a bit more car than you would want on the construction site. Davin’s choice is a 1970 Chevrolet El Camino that gets its power from a 454 CI V-8 with a Rock Crusher 4-speed. Matt’s choice, a 2004 Chevrolet SSR, has a supercharged 5.3-liter V-8 with an automatic transmission and a retractable hard top.
In the final episode of season one of Generation Gap, Matt and Davin compare family cruisers. With its six-figure price tag and top speed of 208 mph, you¹re unlikely to see Matt¹s selection, a 2012 Ferrari FF, waiting to pick up the kids at school. Its part-time AWD system is powered by a direct-injection, 6.3-liter V-12 that blasts out 651 hp. Davin¹s choice, a 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, may seem unassuming at first, but its Edelbrock/Lingenfelter Edition E-Force supercharged LS3 makes just as much horsepower as the Ferrari. It also comes equipped with Ridetech Air-Ride suspension and Wilwood disc brakes.
