조선 정조시대 때 절대권력을 누린 홍국영의 일생을 중심으로 한 사극이고 조선일보에 연재한 유현종 원작 《사설 정감록》을 원작으로 했는데 첫 회에서 빠른 템포의 이야기 전개로 관심을 모았음에도 이야기의 큰 줄거리가 분산되는 듯 산만하면서 늘어지는 인상을 풍겨 극적 흥미를 반감시켰다는 지적이 있었다.

KBS1's 11th Daeha Drama tells the story of Hong Guk Yeong, a powerful politician during the reign of King Jeong Jo in 18th Century Joseon. Hong Guk Yeong strongly supported Jeong Jo's rule, and his intelligence and resourcefulness made him the king's favored right-hand man, but his desire for power eventually resulted in his exile.

イ・サン(正祖)の時代に絶対的な権力を振りまいたホン・グギョン(洪國榮)の波乱万丈な一代記。派閥政治の犠牲になり、父である栄祖の手に殺されたサド王子。王子を殺した勢力は彼の息子である世孫まで殺そうと企むのだが、そんな危機から世孫を守ったのがホン・グギョンであった。その後、グギョンは世孫の側近になって周りに王の座を狙う宿敵に囲まれていた彼を助け、王の座に引き上げた。正祖(イサン)は王世孫時代より自らの警護にあたってきた洪国栄に全幅の信頼を置き、宮城の護衛にあたらせたが、洪国栄は正祖の信頼を背に、いわゆる勢道政治を行い、行き過ぎた権力独占に動揺した正祖は洪国栄に退任を勧告することとなった。洪栄は自身の勢力を維持するために計画した孝懿王后毒殺が発覚し、故郷へ追放となり… 。
