守护山林二十年的两名森林公安在任务中与偷猎团伙进行殊死搏杀，一名牺牲，另一名身负重伤，偷猎者下落不明。五年后，魏疆从森林公安局离开，选择做一名护林员继续守护森林。新兵秦川来到保护区，机缘巧合下魏疆成了秦川的老师，因伤病提前退伍的魏疆并未停下脚步，他带领秦川踏上了巡逻之路。在熟悉环境的过程中两人结识了当地年轻的自然保护区兽医叶小婉，热心的动物保护组织领袖赛娜等人，不料半路意外发现了偷猎者的踪迹，遂决定与其誓死周旋。穷凶极恶的偷猎团伙、嗜血凶残的狼群，两人数次徘徊在生死边缘，却依然无畏前行；质朴的牧民、善良的背包客，萍水相逢的善意一次又一次地温暖着他们绝望的心；当偷猎者终被伏法，向往广袤世界的新兵亦从老兵的身上学到了何谓使命，何谓传承
