80년대 중반 KBS에서 방영되었던 '사모곡'을 리메이크한 드라마로 양반과 여종 사이에서 태어난 만강의 생애를 다룬 사극이다. 김생원 집 여종 옥단은 김생원의 아이를 갖게 되고 만삭인 상태로 질투심에 시달리는 김생원의 아내에게 주리를 트는 고문을 당한다. 자신의 아이에게 남겨질 운명을 예감한 옥단은 자신의 아이와 김생원 아내가 낳은 아들을 바꿔달라는 부탁을 남긴채 숨을 거둔다. 세월이 흐르고 두 아이는 신분이 뒤바뀐 채 청년으로 성장하지만 그들에게는 예기치 못한 악연이 기다리고 있는데.. 후에 만강은 신분을 속이고 양반 가문의 딸인 보옥을 사랑하고 과거게 급제한다.
