清雍乾年间，姑苏一带的织造业独领风骚，苏绣、缂丝均是朝廷贡品。苏州府任家世袭苏州织造行领织职务，拥有祖传的缂丝秘技。任家家主任雪堂性格温文尔雅，而夫人沈翠喜正相反，性格刚毅雷厉风行，不仅将任家治理的井井有条，还凭借高超的织绣技艺将任家的缂丝工艺发扬光大，成为远近闻名的“当家主母”。然而天有不测风云，任雪堂为了追捕水匪，查清走私生丝的真相而发生意外，下落不明，让任家陷入重重危机。沈翠喜闻讯后强忍悲伤，为了保住任家的缂丝秘技和唯一的血脉，与情敌曾宝琴联手对抗外界的风雨飘摇。最终，任雪堂安然归来，沈翠喜经过这些年的风波，感悟到缂丝的极高境界，不愿再陷入复杂的感情生活中，将任家托付给曾宝琴，翩然远去
