杜小双（李芸）在双亲过世后，寄住于朱家。朱家人把小双当成自家人般的疼爱，朱诗卉（严晓频）对小双情同姐妹，朱诗尧（王诗槐）喜欢小双，却因脚瘸自卑，始终不敢表白。小双在诗卉男友雨农的介绍下，认识了作家卢友文（马晓伟）。 卢友文聪明又热情，深深地吸引小双，他和小双一样无父无母，同病相怜的两人，很快就决定结婚。谁知友文不切实际、好高骛远，连一篇像样的文章都写不出来。 为了维持家计，小双在诗尧的帮忙下，靠写歌赚取微薄的版税。家中一贫如洗 ，两人之间争执也愈来愈多，友文为了寻找灵感竟然迷上赌博，甚至还为了抢走小双奶奶送的玉坠子，失手将她推倒，导致流产。小双伤心欲绝，决定离婚。尽管如此，小双还是拒绝诗尧，表示愿意等待友文，直到他完成作品。诗尧无奈，只好继续守候在小双身旁。之后听说友文得了肝癌，小双特地南下探望，友文即使生了重病还是坚持完成作品，才在小双的怀里咽下最后一口气 。
