公元前494年，吴国大败越国，越王勾践入吴宫为奴三年，受尽屈辱。勾践回国后卧薪尝胆，重用贤臣文种、范蠡以求复国。文种献上“伐吴九术”，原本平凡的浣纱女西施怀抱不做亡国奴的意愿，告别爱人范蠡前往吴国。西施在吴王夫差君臣对勾践心存警惕，屡屡试探的时候，常常及时洞悉，传信示警，范蠡等人设法化解，才化险为夷。越国韬光养晦积聚民心，吴国却好大喜功，征伐无度，此消彼长之下吴越国力已然并驾齐驱。勾践终于抓住夫差北上黄池争霸的机会，攻破吴都姑苏，完成复国。故事在尊重历史的情况下，亦抒写了西施与范蠡相知相爱，舍小家为大家的传奇。
