تدور الأحداث حول (متولي) وهو رجل يبدأ حياته من الصفر، حيث يعمل لدى تاجر أقمشة يثق به كثيراً، وبعد وفاة التاجر يتزوج متولي من أرملته وينجب منها، لتتوفى هي، ويدير هو الثروة كلها، حتى يصبح من أكبر التجار في المنطقة، لتتوالى بعدها زيجاته الواحدة تلو الأخرى.
