Anne of Green Gables follows the life of an orphan called Anne Shirley from her childhood to her teenage years. At the beginning of the 20th century at Prince Edward Island, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, two middle aged brother and sister come to realize the need to get some help to run their Green Gables farm and decide to adopt an orphan boy. However, due to a mistake, a very special girl is sent to them. Anne's character is the opposite of Marilla's, and despite the initial decision to send the girl back, she decides to let her stay on trial. It won't take long for the girl to change Marilla's mind and make her aware that ever since Anne's arrival, their lives have changed for the best.
Now in their twenties and with World War I looming, Anne and Gilbert move to New York to pursue Gilbert's medical career and Anne's writing career. After many unsuccessful months, they move back to Avonlea and into the midst of war. Gilbert feels pressure to join the army as a medical officer and is soon listed as missing in action. The indomitable Anne sets off to the battlefields of Europe in search of Gilbert, and helps a young French woman and her son who in danger along the way.
Anne, now a middle-aged woman, is troubled by recent events in her life. Her husband, Gilbert, has been killed overseas as a medical doctor during World War II. Her two daughters are pre-occupied with their own young families and her adopted son Dominic has yet to return from the war. When a long-hidden secret is discovered under the floorboards at Green Gables, Anne retreats into her memories to relive her troubled early years prior to arriving as an orphan at Green Gables and being adopted by the Cuthberts. Still haunted by her early childhood, the impact of this difficult period has a far-reaching effect on this older woman, once she discovers the truth about her real parents. She begins a delicate search for her birth father. It is a journey through a past fraught with danger, uncertainty, heartache and joy.
