Herot is bustling as the town makes preparations for the Gathering at which the next ruler of the Shieldlands will be elected; but the pressure mounts to catch the killer before another victim is claimed.
Rheda, Slean and Abrecan ride out to stall the other tribal leaders and prevent a panic, whilst Beowulf begins his search with Koll, the deputy Reeve. Their enquiries lead them from the working heart of Herot, to the smelting pits, to the upper echelons of the Golden Hall. The discoveries they unravel shock them to the core.
Meanwhile, a member of Rheda’s riding party fails to return to Herot, signalling further danger may be in their midst.
Les Barons doivent se réunir à Herot pour déterminer qui deviendra Jarl des Shieldlands. Rheda veut être élue mais Rate, le Baron des Varnis, ne l'entend pas de cette oreille et veut être sacré à sa place. Il envoie un messager à Herot pour prévenir qu'il prend son temps et ce dernier se fait assassiner, à peine arrivé, par la même créature qui a tué Bayen. Après avoir regardé les traces de sang de cette créature, Beowulf comprend que c'est un Change-peau. Koll et Beowulf enquêtent pour retrouver le Change-peau. Pendant ce temps Slean est parti à la rencontre de Scorann, Baron des Wisdeth, qui est tombé dans une embuscade...
