    Rob relocates from the rugged Tahr country, further north to thick forested mountains closer to the coast where they make an uphill assault into the Chamois country. After a huge climb, the tree line is reached and the terrain opens up into alpine grasses, which is prime habitat for the extremely wary Chamois. These animals have some of the sharpest eyesight of any animal on the planet and represent an extreme challenge for the adventurous hunter.

    Rob again teams up with charismatic local Clark McGhie to hunt Scrub Bulls. Through northern Australia, Scrub bull is a term used for bull cattle that have gone wild. These animals are one of the most dangerous bovines around as they are often foul tempered, notoriously nasty and extremely wary. Scrub bulls are a scourge to cattle owners as they are of mixed breed and pollute pure genetics, dramatically decreasing the value of the herd. For the hunter, they represent a unique, exciting and dangerous challenge.

    Wild or feral pigs are in abundance across much of northern Australia, they are a huge environmental pest, and can grow to huge sizes! During summer in outback Queensland, temperatures soar to near 40 degrees Celsius, but as long as you can endure the heat-the hunting is fantastic and the pigs can be found up close and in big numbers as they move towards water.

    Archery hunting is definitely a pursuit for the patient and committed. Ranges must be close, shots must be accurate, so it requires precision control of all the senses.     The Asiatic Water buffalo were released into Australia over a century ago and they are now an icon of the territory. While classed as an environmental pest, they are considered by many to be a sustainable resource as they provide value through financial return to landowners through live export, pet meat and hunting. Rob joins with good friends Joe and Lou, together they travel to a remote Aboriginal community in Arnhem land where they camp with the locals and begin to stalk for one of the largest bovines in the world.

    Of all the Western states, Idaho provides some of the best opportunities for non-resident hunters to gain access to wilderness areas and hunt for bull Elk during the bugle. In recent times the iconic Elk has had an amazing story of survival and endurance, and thanks to the efforts of the Rocky Mountain Elk foundation, Elk numbers, public land and hunting opportunities, have never been better. In neighboring Montana, the small town of Missoula is the headquarters of the RMEF and before the guys get into their adventure, Rob has a fascinating interview with the guys at the RMEF and learns more about their amazing success.

  • S03E01 South Australian Fallow in the Rut

    Rob travels to South Australia to meet up with local hunter Morgan to hunt fallow deer. It is late March and the peak of the rut, in which the fallow bucks voice with their characteristic deep grunting. During this time, with skillful stalking, the bucks can sometimes be stalked at close ranges in thick scrub, which makes for very exciting hunting.

    Part 1. The Brisbane Valley is the traditional home of Red deer in QLD. The Ridge Group is a non-for-profit organization that provides balloted public access to quality red deer hunting on private land. Rob draws a block in the ballot then meets up with good friend, hunting guide and RIDGE Group president Clark McGhie. During the “Roar” or rut, the red stags voice with a deep roar and if all goes well, they can be called in to close range. As hunters arrive for the start of the rut, Rob documents the RIDGE group’s ballot procedures and briefings, then gets into the bush for a very exciting week, hunting roaring red stags.

    Part 2. Following the amazing events of the first two days in the backcountry, Rob Andrew & Greg continue their hunt for a trophy Bull Elk. The unit has produced some great numbers of animals and finding Elk is now not the problem, however getting a shot is proving extremely challenging. In the latter part of this episode the boys load up the backpacks and push further into the wilderness and the result is quite spectacular.

The North Island is blessed with some fantastic hunting opportunities on public land and in this episode Rob joins Aaron Kent from Hunting Downunder, helicopter pilot Chris Crosse, and the head of DOC Sika deer management, Dan Herries. Witness the spectacular scenery of the Kaweka Ranges as well as a great example of the huts available for hunters, the challenging stalking, and the fitness required to hunt in the terrain.

    Part 2. The first few days of our hunt in the Kaweka’s had been a great success. In stage 2, we relocate to hunt the alpine tops, a beautiful environment, but subject to sever weather extremes. We’re in for some quality action up in the tussock, but not before we battle with a Nth Island Eel, and finally glass some Sika on the move after the bad weather. For the last few days up high we are joined by DOC staff member Dan Herries, who gives us a fascinating insight into the groundbreaking strategies of sustainable deer management in the Kaweka Forest Park.

    Part 1. Immortalised through the writings of Ruark and Capstick, the Cape Buffalo is a powerhouse of brute force, arguably tougher, meaner and more vindictive than any animal on the planet. On this adventure Rob journeys to The Caprivi Strip in northwest Namibia, to hunt with Omujeve Safaris, one of Africa’s most prestigious safari outfitters. The Caprivi is an unfenced wilderness that covers over 30,000 square kilometers, and the story that unfolds truly is, a unique insight into wild Africa and also Namibia’s world class game management and conservancy system.

    Part 2. Our first few days hunting in Namibia sure took some twists and turns. After responding to a call for help from a neighboring conservancy that had been an issued a problem animal permit for a dangerous bull hippo, Rob again returns to the floodplains to try and track him down. Later in the hunt the buffalo hunting continues amid lions and thunderstorms, and finally after 10 days and 5 failed stalks, he gets a Bull in his sights.

    Without doubt, the premier game animal of the South Pacific is the mighty sambar deer. Introducted into Victoria 150 years ago, they have now colonized the South Eastern section of the country and are a much loved part of the landscape in the Victorian high country. One on one, the sambar represent a stalking challenge unlike any other in the world, and in this episode, Rob travels to the iconic Wonnangatta Valley to hunt them in the spectacular Alpine National Park.

  • S04E01 Feral Goats

    Rob travels to the central NSW tablelands to hunt feral goats. In this area and across much of Australia, goats were introduced by early gold prospectors and now they have multiplied to become a serious pest. It is late winter and with the cool clear days, its prime time to be hunting goats which can provide a tasty feed, and a very elusive trophy in a monster Billy!

  • S04E02 Victorian High Country Sambar

    In this episode Rob is back on his home turf, backpacking into one of the most remote sections of the Victorian Alpine National Park. There is a lot of romance associated with backpack hunting and in reality it’s hard, hard work, but for the dedicated, the rewards are worth it. In this region, the lure for the keen hunters is the huge antlered stags that have grown old here due to ideal habitat and virtually zero hunting pressure.

    There is nothing quite as simple and enjoyable as a session on the varmints. At a grass roots level, hunting Rabbits & Foxes is something we all love and it’s a form of hunting that can be enjoyed from the youngest kids right up to the oldest kids! This hunt takes Rob to the rolling hills of central NSW where he has a fantastic couple of days & some hot barreled sessions helping out the farmer, and taking a feed for the table.

    With Fallow Deer now widespread across the mainland, hunting opportunities are numerous however going back a few years, if you wanted a top quality trophy Fallow buck, Tassie was where it’s at, and still to this day, some of this country’s greatest bucks have come from the Apple Isle. After an interesting quick chat with the guys from the Game Management Unit about Fallow Deer management, Rob heads to a property in the states North West where he and Andrew camp out in an old trapper’s hut, and have a challenging and exciting few days, trying to find a quality buck.

  • S04E06 Wild Dogs

    In recent years, across rural Australia, Wild dogs have become one of the most serious issues to face our farmers. The damage caused through stock losses and lost productivity is huge, not to mention the cost of trapping baiting and shooting programs. Wild dogs are an extremely elusive and cunning animal to hunt, and for this episode, Rob teams up with wild dog behavioral expert, Rob Herbert. Together they hunt North eastern Victoria, both by day and night, trying to call in these dangerous predators.

  • S04E07 New Zealand Tararua Reds

    The Tararua forest park is public land, and lies at the southern end of the North Island in New Zealand, and consists of over a quarter of a million acres of steep, heavily forested, mountainous terrain. Its rugged beauty, is its main attraction to hunters, trampers, fisherman and adventurers. After flying in to Wellington, Robs travels to the Carterton base of Amalgamated helicopters at the south eastern end of the range. Owner and chief pilot Jason Diedrich flies the boys into the Tararua backcountry for an extremely exciting, 10-day hunting and fishing adventure.

    In this adventure Rob is joined by a much loved member of his family, his 8-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, Angus. Together they travel to the Ferneaux Islands of Bass Strait to stay with Chris Rhodes of Rockjaw Tours, who offers some of the best wing shooting in the southern hemisphere. For 3 days they hunt the rolling tussock of the historic Vansittart Island, for a very unique and abundant population, of Brown Quail.

    Exploring Victoria’s remote Alpine wilderness with just a backpack and a rifle is a pretty special experience. On this hunt its early December, and Rob is hunting the spectacular Victorian Alpine National Park for Sambar Deer that are attracted to the higher elevations at this time of the year to browse on the lush feed that can be found in key areas. Like any backpack hunt, this one is a challenge as lack of water, and the Alpine environments brutal weather are all serious factors to consider, but for the keen adventure hunter, the rewards are always worth it.

    Rob has been hunting goats for years, and the lure of big billies never gets old, but a big billy in the magic 40” range has always managed to escape him. Mike is also part of team building a new abattoir in Bourke for the processing of wild goats, and he gives us some fascinating insights into their new venture that will be a win for local farmer’s and bring a welcome boost to employment for the region.

New Zealand is home to the only population of Whitetail deer in the southern hemisphere, and one of their two home ranges is this rugged expanse of coastal wilderness. Rob joins his friend Geoff and a local crew of Kiwis that have made frequent trips here and he soon understands the attraction of this unique place that is rich in wild bounty from both land and sea.

    The spring of 2020 in Victoria delivered massive rainfall to the Sambar range, and combined with the regrowth after the bushfires of early in the year, the conditions provided a unique “time of plenty” for the Australian bush. Straight after the covid-19 lockdowns in Melbourne, Rob teams up with mates Andrew and Loui to explore a wild and remote part of the high country, targeting lower elevation creek flats in late Spring, and they stumble into a very rarely witnessed localized peak in the Sambar Stag rut.
