Candy approaches the young man who sheds tears at the ship's railing and does not even remotely resemble Anthony. The son of the Duke of Grandchester turns, disturbed out of his reverie, laughs loudly and calls Candy "freckles" before retreating as George walks onto the scene. Candy is welcomed into Southampton by Alistear and Archibald. Because the strict school does not allow pets, George wants to give Klint to the zoo. But when Terry Grandchester chases their carriage and its horses off the road, honking his horn, Klint makes a break for it. When they find Kint playing dead, Alistear has the idea that Klint could pretend to be a fur collar around Candy's neck. After a sightseeing tour in London, Candy proposes to visit grandfather William, whom neither has ever seen, at the Savoy Hotel. But inside, they only find the insolent Terry who gives "Freckles" a letter from Grandfather William. Candy's guardian has already left on his voyage back for the US and advises Candy to study hard, to grow into a lady. He promises that some day they will meet. Finally, they arrive at Saint Paul's Academy, where Candy learns the principal has been waiting for her arrival for three hours already. This does not bode well.
Ce jeune homme passe des larmes aux rire alors que Candy l’aborde et se moque d’elle. Archibald et Alistair viennent la chercher et veulent emmener Capucin au zoo car il ne sera pas autorisé au collège. Il se sauve et manque d’être tué par un chasseur. Elle passe à l’hôtel où elle pense rencontrer l’oncle William, mais elle retrouve ce jeune homme, Terrence, issu d’une grande famille.
Candy si avvicina un po' timorosa a quel giovane che sta piangendo aggrappato al parapetto dell'imbarcazione: è il figlio del duca di Grandchester. Disturbato dalla presenza inopportuna della ragazza la deride chiamandola "signorina tutte lentiggini", prima di abbandonare il ponte. Al porto di Southampton viene accolta da Stear e Archie e dal signor George che li accompagna.
Poiché nella scuola in cui s'apprestano ad andare il severo regolamento vieta l'introduzione di animali, George vorrebbe dare Klin allo zoo. Stear ha però l'idea brillante che Klint potrebbe fingere di esser un collo di pelliccia indossato da Candy. Dopo un giro turistico per le vie del centro di Londra, Candy propone d andare a far visita allo zio William, che nessuno di loro tre ha ancora mai veduto.
All'Hotel dove risiede incontrano invece il ragazzo insolente che Candy ha conosciuto a bordo della nave, si chiama Terence e consegna ai tre una lettera dello zio William che li informa d'esser dovuto tornare urgentemente negli Stati Uniti: consiglia Candy di studiare con passione per poter presto diventar una vera signorina della buona società. Conclude con la promessa che un giorno riusciranno finalmente ad incontrarsi.
Giunti alla Saint Paul School, Candy apprende che la direttrice è rimasta in attesa del suo arrivo per ben tre ore: come inizio ciò non fa davvero ben sperare.
