Ten-year-old Millie Forrester, abandoned by her mother in the brothels of 1854 Newcastle, is taken in by "Raggie Aggie" Winkowski and her disabled helper, Ben. The series follows Millie's journey from childhood, as she navigates the harsh realities of Victorian-era Newcastle, including the dangers of child corruption and the influence of the local pimp, Boswell. Millie eventually grows into a young woman, protected by Aggie and Ben, and experiences love, loss, and the complexities of her own identity.
