Season 2017

  • S2017E01 Casio MX-10 Part I - Partial Teardown

    • March 29, 2017

I bought a Casio MX-10, an MSX computer / videogame system, and I disassemble it here for your enjoyment.

  • S2017E02 Casio MX-10 Part II - Testing

    • March 30, 2017

I got the MX-10 put back together and powered it up. Everything works great. No fault of mine. Remember how I said I'd double check the polarity at the end of the last video? I did not do that thing. Not an in depth review of anything, just demoing the device

  • S2017E03 Vlogue #1 - Parcels

    • March 31, 2017

I'm tubing for the first time. We received parcels and I will explain their contents.

  • S2017E04 Casiotone MT-800 teardown

    • March 31, 2017

I got this keyboard in exchange for services rendered along with a pack of floppy disks. At least the disks worked out. I'll warn you, this video is quite disturbing to the electronically minded. This keyboard had a bad life and met a tragic fate. The voice and sounds in the background are my girlfriend, Daria, working on her arcade project. I don't have any lighting yet so I had to use her office.

  • S2017E05 Arcade Cabinet Yupdate #1

    • March 31, 2017

I realize update is a bit of a fib considering this is my first video about it on here, but we've had this machine for weeks so that's what it is. This is a Crowin Case, a Korean "candy cab" sit-down arcade game cabinet. We picked it up on local Craigslist for cheap on account of it being pretty bare and broken, and we've been healing and upgrading it. Neither I or my girlfriend Daria have ever worked on one of these before but we've done our homework for years and we're muddling through okay so far. Further updates to come!

  • S2017E06 Joystick Teardown

    • April 3, 2017

I got a cheap joystick on eBay that I thought was much better than it actually turned out to be. Let's see how much effort I'm willing to put into it. I have to apologize for a couple things. The video exposure fluctuates wildly in the beginning and the audio quality keeps changing. I'm really, really new to video production and I'm shooting on my smartphone. The external mic I got is finicky and unidirectional and I forgot to lock exposure on the first segment. I also messed up my screen recording for the stick testing. I'm working on it though and should be improving as time goes on. Appreciate your patience!

  • S2017E07 Vlogue #2 - New bench

    • April 11, 2017

I built a new workbench and received several projects to do on that workbench

  • S2017E08 eBay Reviews - Episode One: Radios

    • April 30, 2017

This is an experiment, a podcast-style video in which me and two good friends explore eBay and discuss everything interesting about what we find. I've never done anything like this before, but some people expressed interest so I figured I'd give it a shot. I set this up ad-hoc and didn't realize a couple things: One, the video gets choppy when the webcam is fullscreen - had no idea until I was done shooting. Two, the dynamic range on this microphone is very poor and the audio gets loud and clips at times - I'm very sorry for that, but there's nothing I can do in post to fix it :( If you enjoy this, PLEASE let me know and I'll do more! If the length is an issue I can aim for shorter in the future, but I think it's always going to be pretty long if I'm doing multiple items (it's like 10-15 minutes per item.)

  • S2017E09 Drill Brace Restoration

    • July 5, 2017

Although this channel is ostensibly about electronics, I also do woodworking and I really appreciate old tool restoration videos. So I made one. This video is deliberately long because it's intended for you to chill out and relax to, probably while you do something else. Let me know if you like this kind of thing and would want to see more, and if it'd be better if they were shorter.

  • S2017E10 Vintage Software Project Intro

    • July 24, 2017

This is a long-delayed overview of my DOS software archaeology project and the machine I'm going to be doing it on, along with some philosophy about why I want to do this project and what you can look forward to on this channel if you stick around. I don't intend to fill my videos with "comment like and subscribe", but I would ask this one time that if you're interested in this at all, please subscribe so I know you're interested. • S2017E11 Old Apps Ep 1 Part 1 (Games)

    • July 29, 2017

This is the first half of the first episode of my vintage software series. I decided to start out with some games, because shareware discs are so easy to find and there's so much to explore, and the utility program for this episode will be in a second segment (it took up more screen time than expected.) I'm also still working out my "voice," since I've never done videos before and I'm still trying to figure out what works best, so I'm a lot louder and maybe a little abrasive in this one. Let me know in the comments if you prefer the before or after. You can find shareware CD ISOs on the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/cdbbsarchive

  • S2017E12 Vlogue 2 - The Junk Stores

    • July 29, 2017

Went out on a treasure hunt today, found some cool stuff, came back nearly empty-handed - but the fun we had along the way was the real friends we made.

  • S2017E13 Covox Build

    • July 30, 2017

In which I BUILD a piece of 1980s PC hardware, from scratch, for kicks. This is meant to be a tutorial as much as a demo, so if you want to skip all the assembly, go to 26:00. Apologies for the hissy audio, I was using my mic straight into my camcorder and the levels looked fine but it turns out they were really low. Whoops. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covox_S... - You can read the thin history here. It's a pretty basic electronics concept so it was bound to happen sooner or later, but I'm still stunned that it did - also stunned at how well it works.

  • S2017E14 Electribe jam

    • July 31, 2017

We just picked up a first gen Korg Electribe ER-1 and it's absolutely a pleasure to use. I'm pretty rough at making music still so there are some noticeable errors and rough patches in this but I thought I'd upload it anyway, someone might enjoy it. Gear: Korg Electribe ER-1 Korg Monologue Ibanez DE7 Delay/Echo

  • S2017E15 VGA Distribution Amp

    • August 6, 2017

I bought a VGA distribution amplifier used and needed to obtain a weird power supply for it. Follow along as I reverse engineer the power supply to figure out how to safely energize this gadget.

  • S2017E16 Old Apps Ep 1 Part 2 [Quick & Easy CAD]

    • August 19, 2017

Thanks for your patience! This took so long! Oh my god! I had so much trouble getting this recorded, everything was just DISASTROUS. But it's finally done - and I got a bunch of other stuff recorded too, so the next video will come much sooner!

  • S2017E17 Vlogue #3 - Eclipse Tripse

    • August 27, 2017

Okay this one's a little rough - it has thrift store trips and stuff but it's long and the stores are not terribly productive. This is what the weekend had to offer though. Enjoy the eclipse footage, I hope!

  • S2017E18 Old Software Episode 2

    • September 3, 2017

In which I test software from the Micro-Star Software Club, which will be powering several videos going forward! Includes: - Inner Space (game) 5:48 - 3D Graph (useless app) 10:35 - FaxPerfect (cool app) 11:40 - SmartDraw (excellent app) 15:50 - Icon Wizard (useless app) 22:33 - Turbo Files (okay app) 23:55 - Home Program (horrendous app) 27:08 - Book It (To be Continued) 31:35

  • S2017E19 Wideangle Lens Adaptor [for Canon Vixia HF R800]

    • August 28, 2017

Just a quick vid about the wideangle lens adapter I just received. It's not very hot but I figured this might help someone else who's starting out.

  • S2017E20 Paint Write and Play

    • August 31, 2017

Review of Paint Write & Play, a program for young children to write picture books. Overall, not a bad app.

  • S2017E21 1000 Great Games [Stream]

    • September 2, 2017

I did a stream last night with my friend Chris in which we played some horrible old games from his childhood. Thanks to everyone who joined! Sorry about the audio - it only recorded to the left channel and I don't have a way to edit it because of the format OBS recorded in.

  • S2017E22 Corridor 8 Unreleased Dev Version

    • September 12, 2017

Okay, this one's kinda rough but I figure it'll have a limited audience anyway so I didn't want to reshoot when I discovered a bunch of awkward moments in post. Hope it's still okay. This video contains: Corridor 7 [3:47] Build demo [12:23] Corridor 8 [14:00] Source archive: http://www.lesbird.com/capstone/defau...

  • S2017E23 Storybook Weaver DELUXE

    • September 13, 2017

This is another children's picture book creator in the vein of Paint, Write & Play which I previously reviewed. Unfortunately I really don't like it, so this video just dunks on it continuously.

  • S2017E24 Trios I and II Drive Switchers

    • September 17, 2017

Picked up these gadgets on my last thrift store trip, finally had a reason to check them out, but honestly I was most interested in the electronics. Here's a deep dive into the circuitry of two IDE hard drive transfer switches.

  • S2017E25 Vlogue 4 - My studio

    • September 18, 2017

Quick tour of my studio where I shoot all my stuff and some new things I just got. Audio's really badly clipped because I'm not used to using this lapel mic yet, couldn't fix it in post, sorry. :/

  • S2017E26 Network Q Rally Championship

    • September 24, 2017

A mediocre rally racing game from 1996 with a spritely engine but not much soul to its name. Enjoy!

  • S2017E27 Sears Electromechanical Calculator

    • October 1, 2017

I found a beautiful electromechanical calculator at Goodwill in phenomenal condition for once (usually they're filthy and broken beyond reasonable repair). Watch this video to see me fumble my way through using a simple-ass adding machine! 00:35: Description of the device 04:45: Operating mechanism by hand 07:50: Electrical modification 19:30: Usage demonstration 23:30: Mechanics demonstration 23:45: Slow-motion footage

  • S2017E28 Vlogue 5 - Goodwill And Rain

    • October 8, 2017

Another trip to a bunch of thrift stores; some interesting finds. The usual.

  • S2017E29 Roland MT90S

    • October 16, 2017

By the end of this video you are going to hate Green Day's When I Come Around

  • S2017E30 Toshiba Player And Tapes

    • October 22, 2017

I got a very old gadget from the ebby and a lot of tapes. This one will probably be boring for a lot of people but if you need some background noise go right ahead.

  • S2017E31 VC1000 Capture Card

    • October 29, 2017

I've been sitting on this thing for a year waiting for a convenient moment to demo it, and I'm glad I finally did. It's a truly ancient (as old as me that is) image - not video! - capture unit designed for the ORIGINAL IBM PC - no bloody AT, XT or PS/2! Raw images from the unit: https://gekk.info/vc1000

  • S2017E32 Urban Total Chaos

    • October 30, 2017

I loaded up the old Eidos game Urban Chaos because I had fond memories Well Guess What they were horribly misplaced

  • S2017E33 Kid Pix Roundup

    • November 5, 2017

I play! Every! Kid Pix!! That I own!! Like I don't have 4, or 3D, so this isn't really a complete roundup honestly

  • S2017E34 Panasonic RQ-330 [ASMR]

    • November 13, 2017

Replacing the belt on a little tape player I found at the thrift store. Very little talking, though there's some noise later. It's a very sleepy Sunday.

  • S2017E35 PC File 5

    • November 26, 2017

To get back to utilities, here's a database app I salvaged from a huge lot of floppies I got on eBay. I shot a lot more video, but for Reasons I need to reshoot it all, so this is all you get today. Enjoy!

  • S2017E36 Tandy 1000 Repair

    • December 3, 2017

I just got a Tandy 1000 HX, which I'm really excited about, and although I won't be able to shoot any videos with it for a couple weeks I did need to repair the floppy drive, so here's that.

  • S2017E37 Tandy Deskmate Overview

    • December 10, 2017

This is a sort-of-in-depth review of Tandy Deskmate 2 and Personal Deskmate 2, both for the Tandy 1000. I had some stumbles as I figured out this highly odd software, but overall I'm very pleased with what I found and I hope you'll get the same impression I did: this is a really neat set of tools for the time and place it was released!

  • S2017E38 Logitech Scanman Color

    • December 18, 2017

Just dicking around with a weird old predecessor to flatbed scanners. Enjoy!

  • S2017E39 Yamaha CX5M Part 1

    • December 24, 2017

Here's a video where I make lots of mistakes!!!! I got a new MSX because I have no self control. This is part ONE of this video, where I talk about the device, about MSXes in general, and go through the process of building (and screwing up) a video interface cable for it. The NEXT video will demonstrate how the device actually works, and will be uploaded, uh, soon.

  • S2017E40 Yamaha CX5M Part 2

    • December 24, 2017

Here's part two where I actually demo the device! I'm not a great musician, please forgive. I really like the sound and I think it'll be a lot of fun once i get the proper software. Merry Chrim

Season 2018

    • January 19, 2018

Here's a short video detailing some weird stuff I bought, please enjoy

  • S2018E02 DC to AC Adapter Conversion

    • January 28, 2018

Here's a simple project, converting an "AC Adapter" from DC to AC output. Enjoy!

  • S2018E03 Goodwill Trip 5

    • February 19, 2018

I don't know if this is actually my fifth goodwill video but that's the title you're getting.

  • S2018E04 Vintage Software Review: CAD 3D

    • April 15, 2018

Part 1 of a two-part video. I finally got CAD 3D, the 3D counterpart to the fantastically awful Quick And Easy CAD.

  • S2018E05 Electret Power Supply

    • April 29, 2018

The audio on this video sucks, the video is kind of hastily cut and maybe not very clear and the project was only kind of a success. apologies.

  • S2018E06 Expert Home Design

    • April 22, 2018

I'm stunned at how bad this program is. It's actually, in ways, worse than 3D CAD.

  • S2018E07 Weird Stuff Exhibition 2 - Part 1

    • July 18, 2018

In this video I disassemble a couple of ancient video scalers and analyze their circuitry. There will be a part two soon in which I look at a lot of other devices that may be more interesting. Stay tuned!

  • S2018E08 Weird Stuff Exhibition 2 - Part 2

    • July 19, 2018

In which I show off some more devices, hopefully a little more interesting than the last time. I should note that I was not able to stabilize this video due to my video editor basically just shitting the bed. I hope it doesn't make you puke. Once I have a better CPU and RAM I will reencode and reupload.

  • S2018E09 Goodwill Trip 6

    • July 29, 2018

Against my better judgment, I have once again gone to the store.

  • S2018E10 Big Blue Disk Ep 1

    • October 19, 2018

I hesitate to say "welcome to a new series" - maybe that's what this'll be, or maybe I won't make it past ep.1. In this video, I will review - in excruciating detail - every single app on the inaugural "Big Blue Disk" diskmag. I am not highlighting or filtering anything; I want to address it with as much critical analysis as I can, and that means digging into the entire zeitgeist of the era. That could take a while, so expect these videos to end up pretty lengthy if I do more. I have no idea if I'm biting off more than I can chew here, but I recorded and edited this months ago and I don't think it's garbage, even if it's not a white-knuckle rollercoaster. Please let me know if you want to see more of this; it's really hard to know if anyone would enjoy it other than me, so that feedback would really mean a lot. "Smash that like," I guess? If you were around for this era and any of my conclusions are criminally wrong, please let me know as well and I will publish corrections. I was b

  • S2018E11 Love Letter To JVC KY-210 - Part 1

    • November 28, 2018

I just got this video camera and I couldn't wait to show it to you. Keep an eye out for part two where I'll demonstrate functionality and show you actual footage.

  • S2018E12 Love Letter To JVC KY-210 - Part 2

    • December 4, 2018

In which I explain the sad fate of the JVC, but also demonstrate a feature or two, and share what footage I have. Look out for more thorough pro camera videos from me in the future. Enjoy!

Season 2019

  • S2019E01 Big Blue Disk Ep 3 (January 1987)

    • February 6, 2019

There is no episode 2! Because there's no Big Blue Disk #2 online. If I ever find it, I'll make an Ep 2. This covers the January 1987 issue of Big Blue Disk, and at this point things were a little more exciting than issue one, but the publication is still having trouble finding their footing and finding quality software. Please let me know what you think!

  • S2019E02 The Messy, Bizarre Canon L1 Camcorder

    • June 4, 2019

I've had this thing for ages and finally knocked out a video about it. I was trying to find Just The Right Presentation and I just couldn't because I had so little info beyond the object in my hands. Sorry if this one's a little rough and has some, uh, "plot holes." I reshot it three times and finally put something together from the scraps and called it finished. FOOTNOTE: I realize now that a lot of people aren't aware that by "throw away" I meant I dropped the cameras off at the local ewaste store, which almost certainly put them back out on the sales floor where they were snapped up the next day by someone else. That's where everything goes when I get rid of it, and I used to work at that place so I can assure you, they don't throw out *anything* unless it's literally total garbage.

  • S2019E03 Dreamworld-Adventure - Strange Game / Remarkable Music

    • June 16, 2019

This was a completely unexpected find, but it's why I trawl through old videogame and software collections looking for stuff I don't recognize. Please note: The music is not quite "authentic" because I didn't run this on a real PC, soundblaster or adlib. The music you hear is actually the raw Adlib notes exported from DOSBox and then played back with Adplug in foobar2000, rendered to mp3. This is no less "authentic" than ripping it straight from DOSbox, since both are emulated. When I have a chance to run this on a real PC I will upload an actual rip from line out on a Soundblaster. One hour of Dreamworld-Adventure music: https://youtu.be/BIVVmcjUEjY You can find the MP3, raw Adlib rip and game here: https://archive.org/details/dwa_002 Or here: https://gekk.info/music/dreamworld/

  • S2019E04 JVC CV-0001 - Pt.1: Repair

    • June 18, 2019

This is a neat find from a pretty sad thrift store trip. A little bit of raw footage from it at the end but keep an eye out for another video with more extensive tests and commentary.

  • S2019E05 Three Home Design Programs

    • July 12, 2019

A selection of fine home design software from around the turn of the century. Best of luck. I kept the review to the most interesting parts and didn't do in-depth demos of most of the features in these apps because of how unpleasant they are to both use and watch. They're all intensely fiddly when you get down to the minutiae, and the video would have been two hours of me fighting to get appliances rotated correctly.

  • S2019E06 PBX Phones - Without a PBX?

    • November 16, 2019

These phones promise PBX-style features: intercom, paging, conferencing - without a PBX. How is that possible? A clever way to improve very old technology by applying even older technology! More info on my research into these can be found here: https://gekk.info/articles/ksuless.html

  • S2019E07 Why Is Your NES A TV Station? (That's Weird)

    • December 24, 2019

The title doesn't lie, and the answer is mildly cursed but par for the course. Something I didn't mention is that this applies to almost all consoles released in the entire decade, and in fact a significant number (like the Colecovision) ONLY had RF out; the NES was one of the first consoles to have composite at all. If I could do it all again I'd mention that. I'd also keep my Casio CZ-1000 instead of throwing it away when I was 25. I can't say it enough times: Don't try this at home! Because it's illegal but also because it's mean to your neighbors! DTV is unreliable enough without the hobbyist next door making things worse. Be kind, share the spectrum, move over for bicycles. The clip of Bonanza was not meant to be in the video but it was very funny sped up so I forgot to delete it. It was the episode where a mine collapses under the courthouse.

Season 2020

  • S2020E01 Can A Hard Drive Breathe Regular Air Like Us

    • January 1, 2020

I am an adult now, I can finally do the thing I always wanted to do, and it cost me five dollars. A couple notes about this: Keep in mind that I couldn't exactly reshoot, for obvious reasons, so that's why the narration or pacing might feel off. I also don't think this result is typical of any modern hard drive, but I wasn't going to destroy a 2TB just to figure out what that sounds like.

  • S2020E02 Repairing Apple IIc RAM (Also The Stuff I Broke)

    • January 10, 2020

This is a basic documentary video of me locating and replacing a failed RAM chip in an Apple IIc, in which I make a number of gruesome mistakes but ultimately am triumphant. I recommend not attempting this kind of project unless you're experienced at soldering, have removed ICs before, and have watched a bunch of videos about repairing 80s computers, because there are plenty of pitfalls; these machines are very fragile. I turned the camera off for the trace repair process because I was frustrated and needed to concentrate, but it's about like you'd expect - I stripped a tiny piece of wire, bent it, dropped it into the holes, then pressed the new socket in so it traps the wire ends in the through-holes. The only detail that isn't visible is that the other end of the lower bodge wire had no available hole to drop into, so I had to wrap it around the appropriate leg of the neighboring IC. I *did* run a RAM test with the lower trace missing (it took me four tries to get the trace repair

  • S2020E03 NES to PC Engine Gamepad Mod (Cross-Pollination)

    • February 25, 2020

This video is about a project I undertook to make an easy way for anyone to convert an NES gamepad to work on the PC Engine, since the PCE has a really detestable controller if you ask me. The parts are available inexpensively on Oshpark and Digikey and you can perform this mod yourself for less than $10. I believe this mod will work on the Turbografx-16 if you just use a full-size DIN-8 instead of a mini-DIN-8 cable; the pinouts appear to be identical, but attempt this at your own risk. Let me know if you try it and it works! If anyone is interested in a video about how to design the circuit and board, let me know and I'll put one together. If anyone's interested in a variant with turbo, I'd be willing to look into it but would appreciate a few bucks to cover R&D. My head showed up in a few shots unfortunately, and there are a couple steps I had to cut because the footage was entirely head-focused. I hope it doesn't disrupt things too much!

  • S2020E04 The Forgotten History of Home Video

    • November 6, 2020

In this essay I will tell you about 15-30 years of home video history that you have never heard about from anyone, anywhere. It covers entire categories of technology you never knew existed, and completely defies the most common conceptions about what happened when in the history of consumer videotape. You will link this video to other people during conversations. I made it for that. This is the work of several years of investigation, research, and about 1200 source files culled from Google Books, Youtube, Pinterest, and dead eBay listings. I have cried over this project, I have started from scratch five times, I have put it down for a year and a half and picked it back up, I have wondered if people would find the unfinished project on my hard drive after I departed this mortal coil. But here I am, posting it, against all probabilities. This is because the amount of ground covered is immense. There's thirty years of history in this video; I am summarizing a lot. I am ignoring certai

  • S2020E05 A Tiny, Unlikely Full-Color CRT

    • November 19, 2020

In which I obtain a completely unsuspecting video camera for $40 which includes an incredibly rare cathode ray tube technology that almost nobody knows exists. Fun! Prizes! A bad picture! For more information about this technology you can't do better than this blog: https://visions4netjournal.com/indext... REGARDING THE WHINING NOISE: I am so sorry! I did run a filter which I thought had removed it, but apparently I'm no longer sensitive to the higher components of the CRT whine. I will do better in the future. I recommend you don't scrape all the indextron tubes off of ebay unless you intend to make your own videos; they're rare as hell and largely unpreserved.

  • S2020E06 Show and Tell: Pro Cameras

    • November 27, 2020

I've been collecting professional video cameras for years, meaning to make a video about them sooner or later. I realized they aren't that big a topic individually, so I figured I'd do a quick and dirty run-through of the whole collection, minus the red JVC camera, which I did a more in-depth review of in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsQd_... Someone pointed out that the Panasonic here isn't a DVCPRO machine, just full size DV. Whoooops. I swear, I thought I had read in the manual that it was DVCPRO! My other remarks on the format are largely still accurate as far as I know.

  • S2020E07 Un-Nitpicking the Sony CCD-TR500

    • December 3, 2020

In this video I expound on some absolute speculation about the motivations behind the design of a little camcorder from 1993. Am I right? Am I just making up fantasies? Nah, I'm probably right.

  • S2020E08 Rambling About Batteries

    • December 9, 2020

I needed to modify one of my cameras, and there's no part of these that isn't worth at least ten minutes of consideration. Included a little bit of sample footage from my Panasonic AG-DVC200 from it's maiden voyage outside the home.

If you've ever wanted to try out dialup, or have a need (there are plenty, believe it or not) to make a dialup connection, you don't need a phone line or any monthly fees to do it! You can get this gadget on eBay for thirty bucks, spend about fifteen minutes configuring it, and any pair of modems (or anything else) will be able to talk through it. The rest is up to you.

  • S2020E10 The Weirdest Flash Format (Panasonic P2)

    • December 26, 2020

Hands down, this is the strangest flash memory format ever created, but it was created for very good reasons - just much, much earlier than it had any right to exist. Merry Christmas! FYI, I didn't include much test footage because this video is meant to be about P2, not the camera - I just couldn't demonstrate much about P2 *without* the camera, so I kept it down to the absolute minimum, the features that would only show up because P2 was in use. • S2021E01 Weird Thing: MFJ-1480B Video Title-r

    • January 9, 2021

This is a "quick" (it isn't) review (not really) of a weird object from an unexpected company. The device itself is probably not that remarkable, but the total mystery of its function and its origin from a company that most decidedly does not make this sort of thing adds a lot of flavor. People have noticed the LGBT tape in the background! I made that as a mockup and I'm currently trying to figure out how to get real sleeves manufactured. • S2021E05 You Coulda Just Faxed From Your PC (Since 1995)

    • March 24, 2021

Almost every PC you've ever used was capable of sending and receiving faxes, it put the feature right in front of you, and you didn't look at it because fax is the most boring subject on this entire planet. This video was made at the beginning of February for what was going to be Fax February, but then February was a disaster for me and disrupted my life in many ways, so I've decided it's Fax February indefinitely. I consulted nobody on this and will accept no arguments to the contrary. A footnote: It seems that fax functionality disappeared between 95 and XP. I didn't realize this while shooting, so that's a misstatement; I checked in 98, ME and 2000 and could not find it. Still, that only covers five out of 25 years, and a lot of people watching this weren't around for any of those OSes.

  • S2021E07 Cleaning a Filthy Model M

    • April 21, 2021

I got this keyboard from a friend but I don't know what condition it was in when they got it. It's certainly had A Life, but that's just how it is with keyboards. Yes, I am aware I transposed the M and N. I have reassembled literally hundreds of keyboards in my life and never needed a reference; this is the first time I've swapped keys in at least a decade. I am shame. I shot this on a new camera, so there's a few weird things going on! I think I accidentally enabled the image stabilizer on my lens, which produced a continuous whirring noise I had to EQ out, and is also, I think, responsible for the slow lateral drift in a bunch of shots?? I have no idea how that works, but it's all I can think of. Also, because it has a much larger sensor, I'm still getting used to focusing correctly, so a lot of shots are soft.

  • S2021E08 Beginning the Eduquest

    • April 25, 2021

I finally got one of my white whales, but before I can do much with it, it just needs some spit and polish. Here's that. By the way, I realize I forgot to answer the pending question "how did I finally get one of these": I bought it. On eBay. I waited until one showed up and placed a bid. I have my patrons to thank for throwing in the cash I needed to get this thing - thank you! The Dell drive is an FDDM-101. That model number might be used on several designs, so here are some other figures: P/N 7T761-A01 / 243-560390-101-0. If you find something that matches all of those you should be OK for sure, but any FDDM-101 is probably fine as long as it has the USB port.

    • May 9, 2021

In which I snarkily assess an incredibly expensive camcorder of yore. I'll admit I might have been a bit harsh on it, but even if it's better than I give it credit for, I still think JVC's motives here were not what they should have been. Reuploaded with 40% less "unblurred Kennedy assassination"! Whoops on that first go-round. Special note! I bought a new camera and I am very much still getting used to it. It took me three days to color grade this into something resembling consistency, and it's still all over the place. I'll get better in the future, especially with new glass - I shot this on a Canon kit lens and an adapted off-brand F-mount that I just, you know, had around.

  • S2021E16 WVHS: HD Wasn't Always Digital

    • August 1, 2021

I travel hither and yon to bring you the crunchiest images of the most in-between HD video format. I was so thrilled to actually get this working, you have no idea. Don't take the videos of the screen itself all that literally - CRTs are notoriously hard to record, and like I said, pixel peeping flies in the face of this whole format. To the naked eye the output looks simply outstanding, and I didn't find out how it "really" looked until I was editing the closeups. As I said in the video, if you have any WVHS tapes, I would love to borrow them to rip now that I have a working process. VWestlife's video (used with permission): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZbA0... • September 1, 2021

Here's a piece of video history that is not well remembered for very good reasons. It's astounding how much effort Hitachi put into this for what they got out of it - but I speculate in this video as to why that was. If anyone has an M2, get in touch! Would love to compare it. (This video has audio issues due to air conditioning noise I couldn't fully eliminate, and several voiceovers I was forced into due to factual errors. Sorry!)

  • S2021E21 Sony's MiniDisc Camcorder - It Almost Changed Everything

    • September 30, 2021

In 1999, Sony released a product that makes vaporwave look as 90s as a vinyl flowered couch: The DCM-M1, a camcorder that takes minidiscs. Not only is it a fever dream of 1990s consumer electronics, it was also really, really well designed, and nearly led us to a future where video cameras do far more than just shoot video - but of course, neither of us would be here, creating or watching this, if they had succeeded. Watch to find out what they did right, and where they went wrong. Before you comment: I realize that I asserted that the Minidisc was as common as the ipod in 2003. That's probably not accurate, but there are SO MANY of these things on the ground in the US that I *cannot* accept that they weren't standard-issue for the upper middle class in their day; so it was probably more like iPod ownership in 2001.

  • S2021E22 LMOX2, The Other Weirdest Mouse

    • October 9, 2021

When I made my video about the Q500 mouse, I thought it was basically the only one of its type in the world - until I saw the one LGR had. And then he sent me a picture of the inside, and suddenly the Q500 looked unique again. And then he sent me the one he had, and I opened it up, and... well, maybe my mouse isn't so unique after all. Here's my best shot at a technical analysis of the LMOX2, and also a few corrections.

  • S2021E23 Meet The Edge

This is a PC you're going to see in future videos, and since my studio is in pieces right now, here's a look at it that I shot a week ago. In re the "intel propaganda" bit: I initially read an article that seemed to state that DDR was not yet available in 2000, and wrote my script around that. The actual truth seems to be that DDR was available two years earlier and AMD used it on their contemporary CPUs with no problems, but Intel claimed it wasn't ready for primetime as justification for sticking with rambus. The truth is anyone's guess.

  • S2021E25 CRD Live! All-Day Streamathon

    • May 16, 2021

Hello! Thank you for joining! Today I'm streaming for twelve hours, because I need some extra funds to finish setting up my new studio, and I'm hoping half a day of Live Content is a fair trade. My funding goal is $2500; that covers a new video editing workstation (M1 Mac Mini, this ain't a gaming rig), monitors and hard drives for it, a desk to put it on, and possibly a couple extra bits and pieces of production gear. If I should happen to pass that goal, anything else will go into paying down all the loans I took out. All of this will make it much easier to get back into the groove of Content Creation. If you don't have anything to contribute, that's no problem - I enjoy streaming for it's own sake, so feel free to hang out and watch. I'll mostly be playing and talking about games, although depending on how much I get and how fast, I may have some secret bonuses planned.

    • November 20, 2021

How did a company in the mid 2000s figure out how to cut the cost of computing six times over, and why haven't any of us heard of it? How did they work around Microsoft's legal limitations? Can it run Crysis? I found this product for $4.95 at the local junk store and, as usual, it caused me to discover an entire universe of capabilities I'd always wanted but believed were impossible. As a result, I spent three weeks figuring out how to demo it in a way that would communicate the scale of the whole thing, hence the extreme length of this video. One style comment I would like to make: I realize that during a couple sequences you can't make out the details on the monitor unless you're on a full desktop screen. I could not find a graceful way to solve this problem, and I felt that my narration was sufficient to fill the gap. • December 21, 2021

How long has it been since my last "Weird Stuff Exhibition"? Two years, three? Anyway, I have a lot of weird stuff, here's some of it. This was originally gonna be a patron only video but I liked it too much to not make it public. I posted a short after I shot this video which I just called "the cold heat never worked" and have since said in another unpublished video that the thing isn't worth buying, but that doesn't really contradict my point in this one that I'd rather have it than nothing. Sorry about the shake, as well as the downward camera drift - my gopro mount (as you'll see) was literally a rolled over piece of gaff tape stuck to a hunk of cardboard and it started losing tack partway through. Fortunately I'm wearing a great Jeff Rosenstock shirt, and you can still see the subject matter. Just drag the window halfway down off your monitor, problem solved.

In addition to responding to many of your Thought Prompts, I also did a quick tour of my new studio space that everyone on Patreon made possible. Please refer to the chapter list to find that. Thank you all so much for continuing to watch my stuff. I hope that in the coming year I will push my output above and beyond anything I've done before, but it's been reassuring to know that I don't have to maintain perfect consistency and keep running on the treadmill as fast as I can just to keep from losing what I've built. I think I wish now that I had written out my answers ahead of time, since a number of them I had to cut when I played them back later and heard just gibberish coming out of my mouth, and a number of the remaining ones I feel I could have served better. • December 28, 2021

I have opened up a fair number of Objects before and almost never found another Whole Object inside like this. Ryobi! What are you doing! The title of this video describes the primary punchline, but it's also just an overview of the whole tool's build quality, which I think is worth your time! Ryobi did some wild stuff here! If you just wanna see the Big Reveal it's at 29:17. Since posting this to Patreon I've been informed that the iron body is made of PBT (don't see that too often in tools) and the part I thought was fiber reinforced nylon is actually something called "liquid crystal polymer," a high-spec engineering plastic that I think I recognize from some little SCSI connector bodies. I'm sure neither of these materials are THAT special, but in a consumer tool they seem pretty exotic. Additionally, I thought it was interesting that the lamp chassis is PC+ABS+FR(40), so it contains flame retardant. It feels weird that the iron, which is meant to get very hot, does not have this

This is a video I've wanted to make for several years, ever since I discovered my Mavica had a high speed drive in it. As cool as all of these are, it's still frustrating that they simply never became mainstream. Floppy drives could have been improved before the end of the eighties, there was really no reason for them to stay so slow except maybe controller limitations, and that limitation could have been resolved as well.
