沖縄がアメリカから日本に返還された1972年5月15日に沖縄県小浜島で生まれた少女、小波蔵エリの物語。11年後、東京から上村静子とその息子、和也と文也がエリの家族が経営する小さな旅館に客として滞在することになる。風変わりで楽しい一家は、二人を温かく迎え入れる。しかし、息子の和也が末期がんであり、静子たちは和也の最期の瞬間を美しい自然の中で一緒に過ごすために沖縄に来たと聞いて、絵里はショックを受ける。和也の弟・文哉と絵里は、いつか結婚しようと約束する。しかし、和也の死後、文哉は母とともに島を出て東京に戻る。数年後、二人は再会し、看護師となったエリと医師となったフミヤは、東京の同じ病院に勤めていた。
